Dear Foodies,

Come and join us for delightful seasonal tastings from David Lewis who has generously agreed to host our event once again! A cash bar will be offered.

Ozark Slow Food will be hosting our annual volunteer happy hour to discuss different initiatives and plans for 2012. This will give you the ability to volunteer according to the amount of time that you have available. We request RSVP to fayar48 AT yahoo DOT com* in order to plan for food.

Volunteer Happy Hour!
Thursday, April 5th
5:30-7:00 PM
Brick House Kitchen
1079 S. School Ave.

FayettevilleSlow Food: The history of the organization was rooted (no pun intended) in enjoying the conviviality of sharing food and supporting local food and traditions.
However, in recent years it has become apparent to many of us at Slow Food that if we want to have an effect on locally grown produce, if we want to ensure our supply and help farmers in other ways; then we need to be actively involved.

Let us remind you that American agriculture has changed tremendously in the past 60 years. Those of us that are older remember milk deliveries and the abundance of local food. Yes, times change and we can’t reinvent the past. However, a lot of these changes happened not because there was no demand for local food, but because Government policies along with corporate agriculture benefited the large producers versus small farmers. Policies that view food as just an energy source for the body with little regard for health, taste, or the environment.

If we work together we can help to have a positive impact and help create an environment where Government resources are fairly distributed. We can help insure that small farmers aren’t regulated out of business. We can help ourselves and our community by asking for a USDA that nurtures family farms.

We hope that you’ll join us in any way that you can in supporting sustainable agriculture and a local food economy!

Summer Kitchen Family Farm, the farm of Mariah and Ira White, is now accepting new members for their Winter CSA January 6 – March 30. A 13-week subscription will supply members each week with:

1 dozen eggs

winter squash or sweet potatoes

1 whole chicken or 4 pounds of pork (alternating).

At $38.00 per week each share will be $494.00 for the winter subscription. Home delivery is available for free within a ten mile radius from our farm, and self pick up at the farm is certainly welcome. Each week members receive a list via email of seasonal produce available to purchase in addition to their regular box of home grown goodness.

The Whites’ 18 acre farm is located 3 miles south of downtown Fayetteville at 3702 Wilson Hollow Rd in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Mariah says it’s “blessed with the best of country and city life.” Currently they are raising 200+ free ranging chickens, 7 pigs on pasture, 2 kids, and have recently added a sweet dairy cow named Scarlett.

All of our animals are hormone and antibiotic free. They also tend a half acre vegetable garden, all naturally, which Mariah says feeds them well despite floods and drought. On Sundays the Whites can be found at the Fayetteville Farmer’s Market at the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks 9am-2pm, selling fresh produce, flowers and chicken.

Mariah says she’s been talking to others about a CSA fair this winter.

If you’re interested in getting involved in a fair or in joining the CSA contact them at this link. You can also contact them at (479) 263-9965.

Northwest Arkansas Local Harvest has a new multi-farm CSA. So far 24 members have joined, and there’s room for up to 40 members. Northwest Arkansas Local Harvest is a collaboration between Jesse Napolitano of Brannon Mountain Farm (Madison County, AR) and Paul Chapracki, farm Manager of Ozark Alternatives (Fayetteville, AR). Both have farmed organically for over 4 years. Their farms are Certified Naturally Grown.

As members sign up, they will prorate their share cost.

They operate from May 17th to October 25th. One nice perk about the NWA Local Harvest is that they’ll deliver to Fayetteville residents. For out-of-town members they’ll deliver to a pick-up point, Ozark Natural Foods.

Visit their website for more information: http://ozarkalternatives.nfshost.com/?q=node/9. You can also call Paul Chapracki at 479-251-1882.
